VOLUME 10 NUMBER 1MARCH 1995

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion, or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve to death. It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you'd better be running.

Court rules cordless calls aren't private

The (Tucson) Arizona Court of Appeals ruled that drug dealers and everybody else should know not to expect privacy when they talk on cordless telephones. The defendant argued that marijuana and drug paraphernalia seized was as the result of an illegal wiretap after her neighbor, an off duty sheriff's deputy intercepted her cordless-phone conversation with a radio scanner.

By the way folks, I'm still finding those insidious little things in places they shouldn't be. The more they're used, the more information is compromised.

I place economy among the first and most important virtues, and public debt as the greatest of dangers ... We must make our choice between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude. If we can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of caring for them, they will be happy.
- Thomas Jefferson

Houston Seminar

Time is running out if you plan to attend the next TSCM/Protection of Proprietary Information seminar. It will be held in Houston, TX on Monday and Tuesday, 15-16 May, 1995 at the Ramada Hotel-Near the Galleria, 7787 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX. I'll include an enrollment sheet for your convenience.

If a man empties his purse into his head, no man can take it away from him. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.
- Benjamin Franklin

Future Seminars

As it stands now, the fall session of the seminar will be in Las Vegas again and will probably be held on or about the 22nd and 23rd of October, a Monday and Tuesday. The reason for the change from Thursday and Friday? Room rates are generally lower. But we are still open to presenting the seminar in your location if enough interest is shown.

Drop me a line and I'll place your name on a tickler list if you feel you'll be interested in the future.

It is more than probable that the average man could, with no injury to his health, increase his efficiency fifty percent.
- Walter Scott

Electronic Bulletin Boards

I recently joined a major bulletin board with the hopes it would
1) offer potential to interface with others and open new arenas and
2) offer an avenue to exchange ideas and information. I've gotten comfortable getting in and out and uploading and downloading information. Mostly uploading, it seems, because the arena that lends itself to security is dedicated more to the man on the street than the security professional, with most of their uploads being clip art or cop related gripes. No offense meant to cops, present or former, it's just that I expected a little more. I'll give it a few more months and see what happens. If an attitude change occurs, I'll let you know.

Spy - Counterspy

It seems that February was another one of those months in which foreign governments threw out their spy-counterspy charges. The U. S. and France got into it again, with France charging that five Americans were caught "spying" and were ordered out of France (The order by France was not meant to be made public, so I guess they were only a little guilty).

Here in the U. S., it seems that French officials have been caught on numerous occasions "stealing aviation technology", particularly on the West Coast. Aviation is not the only thing the French, or any other foreign government is shopping for. Apparently, Texas Instruments, Textron, United Technologies and others have been targeted as well.

How"s it being done? Going through briefcases, hacking into computers, compromising insiders, open sources, trash cover, planting moles, etc.

Early to bed and early to rise probably indicates unskilled labor.
- John Ciardi

INSIDE INFORMATION

Kevin Murray's address is PO Box 5004, Clinton, NJ 08809. He still has a few copies of the handout he sent me. It's well worth the effort of asking for. He received several calls for copies before he even knew I was "unleasing the dogs" on him. I had to fax him a copy of the newsletter so he would know what to say when contacted (That's one for me, Kevin).

You needn't love your enemy, but if you refrain from telling lies about him, you are doing well enough.
- Ed Howe

When is a radio not just a receiver?
When it contains a transmitter.

A 25 year old man was convicted of violating the federal eavesdropping law by illegally bugging his 14 year old girlfriend's bedroom. It seems he placed a transmitter in a clock radio he gave her. He wanted to make sure she didn't talk about their sexual relationship.

Observe your enemies, for they first find out your faults.
- Antisthenes

Customer Call Forwarding-
Another use for phone fraud

In Philadelphia, a plumber (not Watergate related) asked his phone service supplier to provide him with "ultra call forwarding" service for phones listed in the names of at least five of his rivals resulting in the probable loss of thousands of dollars. The action resulted in charges of theft by deception, criminal attempt, unlawful use of a computer, criminal trespass and impersonating an employee.
