Q.

A.

What is a bug sweep?

It is the systematic physical and electronic examination of a designated area in an effort to locate electronic eavesdropping devices or other ways in which personal or proprietary information is compromised.

Q.

A.

What would be done in a bug sweep?

There should be a thorough Radio Frequency (RF) examination of the RF spectrum from about 10 KHz to at least 10 GHz, looking for evidence of audio or video that may be originating from the area being examined.  Next, a thorough physical examination of the designated area should be conducted looking for hidden devices or evidence they may have been there but have been removed. In conducting this portion of the examination you may see the sweep team utilizing thermal imagers, near field RF detectors, infrared detectors, audio amplifiers, carrier current receivers and non-linear junction detectors.

Q.

A.

How can a bug sweep help me?

A properly conducted sweep should either

  • locate any device which may be hidden in or near the area of concern, and locate evidence that a device may have been installed previously but has been removed

  • or identify other areas of concern, such as poor information protection, poor internal security, and lack of proper storage or destruction of documents.

Q.

A.

What are the warning signs that I could be bugged?

One warning sign is when information, which has been discussed in confidence with a very limited number of people, becomes public knowledge.

Q.

A.

What should I do if I think I have been bugged?

Cease sensitive discussions in those areas. Have the area secured so as to limit access until it can be properly examined. Contact a reputable company specializing in debugging to arrange for an examination as soon as possible.

Q.

A.

What can I expect if I hire your company?

In our operation we will ask you to explain what is happening, what you have found, what steps you have already taken and give you instructions on other steps you should take. We may have you or your security representative gather further information so we can make a better decision based on facts to help you decide whether you actually need to have a sweep conducted or to take additional steps first. If you decide you feel you need to have the sweep conducted at that point, we will ask for your name, phone number, address and when you would like to have the examination conducted. We will provide you an estimate of how much the examination will cost, based on the information you have provided and an estimate on associated expenses.

Q.
