From: "Steve Uhrig"
Tim, we do TSCM (selectively), and security evaluations. DC is within our local area. I can also recommend a retired State Department gentleman in Annapolis who is competent on security evaluations.
Three people with me have current clearances. I do not.
My writing skills are evident from the 300+ articles I've written for the various law enforcement magazines since 1972. Some samples on our website.
Then there is Steve Uhrig who always seems to have very good information and seems to know what he is talking about, but never has anything good to say about anyone else.
I agree with what you say about Steve Uhrig. nuff said.
I say good things about good people and bad things about bad people. If the number of bad to good is disproportionate, then so will my comments.
I have an intense dislike for persons who rip off others in the profession and the general public. These people keep getting away with their nonsense because others are not aware. "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."
People may not like my delivery, but my facts are accurate and no one on the planet can say they ever got less than an honest deal in business with me.
To the gentleman who asked about Glenn Whidden, Glenn is a real gentleman and exceptionally knowledgeable. Any publications or training he offers is well worth availing yourself of.
Same is true of Kevin Murray, Marty Kaiser and Ray Jarvis. Remember these people are flooded with calls from the public and it may be impossible from a practical standpoint to answer each one. Unless something else like personal considerations, travel or deadlines are in the way, a polite inquiry should get a response. Remember we all have to earn a living and there are only 20 or so work hours in a day, so there is a limit to the amount of pro bono assistance one can expect.

Apology accepted, but not necessary!

From: Kuma3938@aol.com
Tim,
Knowing you, I appreciate what you did regarding the apopogy. However, in my mind it was totally unnecessary. Their was no indication regarding the
individuals identity. I have no idea who it was. Male, female, black, white, Martian or Earthling. It's really a shame when we have to be so
careful about what we say that we must tender an apology for speaking our minds regarding public well known facts. It's really stupid. If someone is ignorant regarding the TSCM field and is looking for information and knowledge why try to hide it. What is wrong with asking questions of the knowledgeable professionals?? That's how you learn, both the good and the bad. Your comments regarding the individuals named were right on and not out of line at all.
I'm really sick of people having to tip toe around what they want to say in
fear of offending someone.
And I don't and won't apologize for these comments. If the shoe fits they can wear it, on their foot or in their mouth. I don't care.

Jim Ross is Jim Ross, I took his training about 9/10 years ago, found that wasn't really anything new as far as I was concerned, but I did enjoy it. Don't think he really means any harm, but think he does have a problem with his Gov't given what he likes to talk about. I was a guest speaker at his Surveillance Expo a number of years ago, a 'money losing' situation for speakers to say the least, wasn't sure about some of the attendees - some real 'off beat' characters - but he can't control who pays the bucks to attend. I wouldn't go back for more of his training, think it's geared for the 'seedlings becoming grass roots' level person.
Oscor 5000. Can't you see yourself standing up to look down at the screen to do spectrum analysis, I like to sit down (thank you very much) to look at the screen. Also, have gotten used to a real CRT screen, the LCD's are ok for some, but not this 'ol dog.
I didn't know Ross 'retired'., it is my understanding that he 'left' after 16 years.
TSA/Whidden - He and his son seem like nice folks, I haven't taken any training from them, but have read some of their 'ear' material, and bumped into them at the odd trade show. Glenn certainly seems to have credible background, and given that, Jason who commented on TSA may be right for a little deception being involved (and probably for good reason)

New TSCM'r in the Toronto area: I can't believe it - A fellow who is a fireman, making almost 60K a year has too much time on his hands. (typical 3 days on 4 days off) Decided to take a course, buy a Spectrum Analyser and TEl. Analyser and go into business as a TSCM X-pert. Some of my client base has contacted me about his mailouts and rates being quoted. One of my clients analysed it quite nicely - he likened it to someone taking a firefighting course, buying a fire engine and then going into the fire fighting business. What next ?
One of the spy shops in Toronto recently was taken down by Metro's finest. A u/c operation had them 'counselling' to commit an indictable offence and procuring bugging equipment (also indictable), pretext used was a 'domestic affair' where one spouce wanted to gather intelligence on the other. Well done Metro.

Back issues of The Bulletin Board can be viewed by clicking on
http://www.amug.org/~dbugman/bullframes.html
My site administrator just put together the frames and I really like it. It should make it easier for you to open the differerent issues. Let me know how you folks like. she is also uploading issues through #15 and should have it done in a few days. I'll then send her the remaining copies for uploading.
After that, I'll try to finish the remaining back issues of The Hot Micx for uploading.
Just so you'll all know, and as many of you are doing, I do not always post all the comments made reference a request or comment. Some are personal, some could be embarrising (although I don't know why, you don't know if you don't ask) and some are issue sensitive. But whenever it might help others pass it on here as well as to the individual asking for the assist.

Tim, Don't see the problem. Every thing you said was on the button. Your views always seem objective to me and handled with the utmost tact. There are some real nuts out there and they should be identified. Not to the point that we knock everyone who does not share our point of view. But the real crazies and those who will sell smoke to make a dollar need to be identified. Although trained and experienced in TSCM, I do not currently perform these services, thus I am in not in competition with any of the TSCM folks. I hope this allows me to be objective in my comments. To people who want info on TSCM, I say ask those who have extensive training and experience and have nothing to gain by blowing their own horn. And get references before you hire anyone. Keep up the good work.
Jack
As I'll (still) be pretty busy for the next month, I'm going to go ahead and post this issue and try to get another one out later this week. Keep the faith and watch your six
