Guess who sent this one in. :>)

A magician was working on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. The audience would be different each week, so the magician allowed himself to do the same tricks over and over again.

There was only one problem: The captain's parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand how the magician did every trick. Once he understood he started shouting in the middle of the show:

"Look, it's not the same hat!"

"He's hiding the flowers under the table!"

"Hey, why are all the cards the Ace of Spades?" Here's another one !!!

The magician was furious but couldn't do anything; it was, after all, the captain's parrot.

One day the ship had an accident and sank. The magician found himself on a piece of wood in the middle of the ocean with the parrot, of course.

They stared at each other with hate, but did not utter a word. This went on for a day and another and another.

After a week the parrot said: "OK, I give up. Where's the boat?"

Subject: cellular question

I am working a case that has an aspect that I have never come a cross. I have a client that is being stalked by an unknown subject. As a retired law enforcement officer I have come across a varied spectrum of situations but this one has an element out of my expertise. As part of this situation here is what has developed. The client will be speaking on her cellular phone to someone when all of a sudden she will be cut off from whom she was talking to and the stalker will be on the line. My question is three fold. (1) How is this being done? (2) Is there a way to use this back against him? (3) What kind of technical expertise does this individual have, is this something you could just pick up out of a book or what? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. Hi Tim,
Let's see, now. If I want off your mailing list (I don't) would I get better results by sending accurate information with the request or would I get action if I dreamed up a few new words for the offensive language list?

Gosh, I don't know which would work better. Can you give me a hint?

Keep up the good work.

As a Mac user, I just had to pass this on.

NEWTON MESSAGEPAD 2000 SALES BOOM, WINDOWS CE MAKERS PLAN UPGRADES

Noting that the Newton MessagePad 2000, on the market for less than a month, is selling more than five times faster than even Apple's rosiest sales projections, Crusty has also learned that those sales are both to corporations and to individuals at the retail level. Even Apple is amazed by all of this, but more amazed are the legions of Newton detractors.

While this makes Apple's Newton division (which the company had been shopping around) feel all rosy inside, Newton competitors, especially the glacially selling Windows CE palmtops, are now feeling distinctly different emotions and thus have begun working on Plan B.

"Our sales stink," one Windows CE product manager at Casio told the Crustmeister General this week. "We've had nothing but complaints about the lack of speed in the platform, the tiny keyboard, and the difficulty in using Windows CE, itself."

As a result, your Watery Wayfarer discovered, the Windows CE hardware vendors have gone back to Microsoft asking for performance and features improvements in the next release of Windows CE--including hand-printing recognition, built-in Web access, and other portable communication features that it currently lacks or does poorly.

Crusty opines that the Newton might just have the impact we all thought that it would have when it was announced lo those many years ago.

Got two offers for any old PSO and investigative types. One in Haiti for a French speaker to work with the local police and another for Bosnia P.D. at 85K a year. The Bosnian job pays well but is a bare base assignment with you living and eating on the remains of the local economy. IED experience a plus.

Tim,
Funny you mention it, because over the last 3-4 weeks the number of queries I've had regarding the training of foreign students has increased at least six fold.

I know of two cases in the last 3 weeks where corporate TSCM people have had their equipment confiscated by customs (when leaving, not returning).

One TSCM'er lost an AVCOM PSA-65, an OSC-5000, several of Marty's boxes, and a few other "low threat" TSCM devices.

Second team lost a HP8566B, several Watkins Johnson boxes, radios, and a Mantis manpack. (Second teams has had all equipment since released by Customs).

The law (and rule) has been in effect for several years, but only recently has State/Custom started enforcing the law (thank you Bill Clinton).

I personally have tried to abide by all the export laws as eswtablished by State and Commerce by getting export papers from Commerce and registering everything with Customs before leaving (that makes it so much easier when you're coming back in).

Tim, back from France so soon? Hope you and Toni had a ball.

Now, as for the actual monitoring. There is s a company up in Minneapolis that makes computer accessory equipment that will do just that. I think the name is CDS or something like that. I can look it up if you really need it. However, it is illegal for the general puplic to purchase or even possess that equipment. There are several Canadian companies that are doing booming business selling that type quipment which, by the way, will also enable monitoring of both digital and analog pagers. They often advertise in the back of NUTS AND VOLTS magazine which, I believe, is published there in Arizona. I know that Don Lancaster, who is connected with NUTS AND VOLTS, lives out there.

Do you know of anyone who has made any documented comparrisons of night vision equipment?? Please add this inquiry to your bulletin board.

I wrote back

Harry,

The only thing I can input on this subject is to be wary of the former Soviet flooding the market. I've heard that the High Voltage section is radiating energy sufficient to cause possible damage to the user.

Subject: Cell-fone modification

Tim,
Reference you BB#18 item about me showing how to modify cell phones for intercept operations. There are some conditions attached: I will only do so for bona fide law enforcement agencies, and then only when requested in writing by the head of an agency to do so. I will also require proof that the agency is authorized to conduct cellular telephone intercept operations. I might add that it will usually be cheaper in the long run for law enforcement agencies to purchase off-the-shelf equipment and software.

I didn't mean for it to sound like Bob would demo his techniques to anyone who came along; it was submitted just so you folks would know that it isn't really difficult to do if you have the capability, are curious and know what you are doing.
